It took me quite a while to get round to the idea that the police is an unnecessary institution whose fundamental purpose is to protect a violent and unjust state and not its citizens (undocumented or otherwise). I don't expect to convince anyone of that with an article or two. Nonetheless, you need to start somewhere, so below you can find some of the resources that led me to that conclusion.
- Minder politie? - Flemish podcast
- John Oliver on Police - John Oliver and his team did quite a few episodes on police related issues, here's one.
- The Dispossessed - "The Dispossessed" by Ursula K. Le Guin really opened my eyes to how an anarchist society without police could look like.
- Sans blanc de rien - Belgian, French language podcast on racism
- Bruxelles Devie - Brussels based, French language independent media that reports a lot on police brutality, abuses etc
- Bruxelles Panthères - Brussels based anti-racist group that documents police violence among other activities
- Justice pour Sourour - I've lost count of the number "Justice pour ..." or "La police a tué ..." stickers that I've seen. It's worth reading up on one or two of these stories, such as that of Sourour, to really understand what people mean when they say that the police is racist and unaccountable.
I have also had conversations with anarchists which I can't really reproduce here. As a substitute, here are some other resources:
I'll try to add to these as I go along. Suggestions more than welcome! You can contact me via the email at the bottom of this page.
